Restaurant review: Tinakori Bistro offers French familiarity
4.5 David Burton for Stuff 16 November 2017continue readingWhile restaurateur Asher Boote is known for avant garde ventures such as Hillside Kitchen and Cellar, having bought and relaunched the failed Tinakori Bistro he has decided to respect tradition and leave well alone.
Tinakori Bistro is that rarity in ever-changing Wellington hospitality: an institution. It's where John Lawrence and Chris Green cut their teeth in the late 80s before opening the Boulcott Street Bistro in 1991, and has been a French restaurant since 1974, when forceful young Frenchwoman Celine Cartier opened the premises as Le Beauchamp and shocked the locals by forbidding smoking until "le café" (well, at least she wasn't like Fernand Point at La Pyramide, who promptly presented the bill to any customer lighting up between courses!).
Appropriately, the bistro has been restored (that is, walls repainted and the floors and wainscoting revarnished) rather than renovated. The exterior remains untouched, and inside, you know you are in a 150-year-old building by the imperfect architraves and the soaring ceiling, from which now hang arty sound baffles. The textile-style striped paint effect on the rear wall is likewise new and chic, as are the two-toned, striped wooden tables.

Beef and Lamb Excellence Award received @ 13 September 2018 The restaurants who currently hold the 2018 Excellence Award have not been compared with each other in the assessment process. Rather, they have been judged on their individual merits and style of cuisine. So, whenever you see the prestigious gold plate hanging on a restaurant wall, you can expect tasty, skillfully composed and superbly presented beef and lamb dishes. So take the guess work out of deciding where to dine and check out our restaurant directory to visit a restaurant near you serving exceptionally well executed and delicious beef and lamb dishes.
