We'd heard… three years on from its opening, the restaurant and bar on the edge of Lyall Bay coastline was still delivering reliable food in a stunning setting, to the purr of planes taking off on the nearby runway. Spruce Goose, we were told, was a good option for us south-coast residents keen to lap up the late sun on a magic Wellington evening.
The vibe was... a relaxed, seaside feel on a stunning evening before the sun went down. Outside tables were full of casual drinkers and diners, with a fair number of jandal-wearing blokes tucking into cold beers and pails of squid and fries. From our outside table, we could stare all night at the surfers riding the frothy waves, black specks like penguins.
If you go... sit outside. If it's blowing, take a jacket.
