With so much swish accommodation opening in response to New Zealand's tourism boom, it's surely time to re-examine our half-century-old prejudice against hotel restaurants.
A case in point is Malo, which within just eight months of opening has made it into Cuisine's Top 100.
Malo is the restaurant beside Havelock North's new boutique hotel, Porters, although you wouldn't necessarily know it. You enter through a separate door and indeed the only obvious connection is the Scandinavian-influenced decor: mid-century chairs, scrubbed wooden floors, slatted screens and a feature wall of exposed white schist. Suddenly it all seems very familiar.
