It all began in October 2010, local residents Mark Hopkins and Jon Baxter teamed up with chefs John Pountney and Marc Harris to create The Refreshment Room. These chefs had extensive experience in London and Europe and were the culinary team behind the successful Delicious restaurant in Grey Lynn. Harris has since moved on and we are lucky to have chefs Hayden Phiskie and Jemima Fullerton-Rasandich producing delicious healthy and true food in The Refreshment Room kitchen.
The old Montana Winery, built in the early 70's, provided the perfect location. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Waitakere's, The Refreshment Room has a large deck which provides outside dining in the summer months.
In April 2012, local residents Viv Head and Jake Taylor saw The Refreshment Room “goodness” and got in on the action. Viv now manages the business, staff and front of house, including marketing and PR. She has also been seen doing the dishes, waiting tables, attending to handyman jobs, making tasty beverages at the bar and tending the till as well!
The Red Room, downstairs at The Refreshment Room, opened in February 2013. It is a great event space for large group dining and banquet dinners, for day time (any day) corporate workshops and training, art exhibitions, special parties, small weddings and conferences, comedy and music gigs, etc.
The Red Room also takes overflow from the upstairs Refreshment Room, and is a great place to relax with your cured meats and early evening beverages or your dessert and coffee. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for further information. See The Red Room option on our homepage for more information.
