Good for you: True Food & Yoga

4.0 Kim Knight for Canvas 8 January 2018

At True Food & Yoga, the kombucha is on tap and the spray tans are organic. You can legit wear your downward dog pants at dinner and, in my opinion, you should not waste this opportunity on a salad. I ordered fries.

Life is all about balance. Before the fries I had a "digestive" tonic ($8.50). The waitperson didn't know exactly what was in it and there were no ingredients listed on the bottle. It tasted vaguely medicinal. It was probably better for me than fries.

Restaurant Review: True Food, Orakei

4.5 Viva 13 October 2016

I never had the pleasure of eating at Hammerheads, the restaurant that formerly occupied this waterfront site on Tamaki Drive. But by all accounts it was the sort of restaurant every coastal city had one of in the 80s and 90s — a nautical-themed, middle-of-the-road joint with room for hundreds. For some reason it’s hard to make that business model work with much sophistication, though we should applaud Hammerheads’ commitment for keeping the theme going right up until the last moment, by going into liquidation.

We don’t yet know much about the longevity of restaurant/yoga-studio combos, but I hope True Food and Yoga has a few good years in front of it. This is my favourite opening in months, the sort of menu you could return to a half dozen times without running out of exciting and delicious things to order.

This is my favourite opening in months, the sort of menu you could return to a half dozen times without running out of exciting and delicious things to order.

You leave feeling light yet soulfully satisfied — a credit to the food itself, which is not always healthy, exactly, but comes without many of the things that tend to knock you over: saturated fat, deep frying, butter and cream. It shouldn’t have taken this long to find a restaurant that occupies the sweet spot between leaving hungry and leaving with adult-onset diabetes.

First Look: True Food & Yoga

Metro Eats 13 July 2016

You saw the words “yoga” and “food” next to each other and you thought raw cheesecake, didn’t you? Well, you’re right, but you’re also in for a surprise. At Nic and Kelly Watt’s new wellness centre and all-day restaurant, the orthodoxy of the clean eating lifestyle is tempered by a healthy measure of indulgence.

On the other side of the building is True Food, a seaside restaurant with terraced seating and a menu of “nutrient-dense”, organic, locally-sourced food designed by the husband and wife team, who met 18-years ago while working at Michelin-starred Nobu London.
