BEEF AND LAMB EXCELLENCE AWARDS Whenever you see the Excellence Awards logo or prestigious gold plate hanging on a restaurant wall, you can expect tasty, skillfully composed and superbly presented beef and lamb dishes.
Welcome to MASU, the exciting Japanese robata restaurant and bar located in the Federal Street dining precinct. MASU brings atmosphere, passion and a contemporary twist to the traditional robata style of cooking over an open charcoal grill. My philosophy is simple – use fresh local ingredients, enhance the natural flavours of each dish and let the food speak for itself. This pure approach to cuisine is reflected in our clean, natural décor. Add to this a lively, informal atmosphere and you have a beautifully bold and dramatically different style of Japanese dining in the heart of Auckland.

Restaurant Review: Masu by Nic Watt
4.0 Cuisine 14 October 2018continue readingKnowledgeable waitstaff welcome diners to the classy, no-expense-spared dining room at Masu, a sophisticated, Japanese robata restaurant in the SkyCity dining precinct. The kitchen is on top of the game, with quality products well cooked to highlight the natural flavours of the main ingredient. Exceptional grilling skills are on show with dishes such as a thick fillet of black cod caramel-crusted with saikyo yuzu miso. Roasted in a tiny cedar sake holder, the intriguing marou chocolate and hazelnut pudding offers perfectly contrasting textures of liquid chocolate, sponge and fresh umeshu ice cream, with a delicate sprinkle of green tea powder. The wine list is well balanced, there’s a very comprehensive cocktail and sake menu and a good choice of both Asian and craft beers.
Restaurant Review: Masu, City
5.0 Viva 11 October 2017continue readingSunday brunch at Masu is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself in Auckland, right up there with a boat trip to Waiheke, a helicopter ride over the city and seeing Simon Dallow buying kiwifruit at Mt Eden Countdown.
At $68 per person the price seems great value to me, but I suppose it depends on how you look at it. Sure it’s a little steep for brunch but, if you time things right, you can definitely think of it as lunch, and possibly even dinner.
More on that in a second, but for a yardstick look at Eight restaurant at the Langham, where a buffet meal in the same timeslot will cost you $75, and where they really are much harder on the opening and closing times.
